Voting Rights Eligibility Game

UX and Visual Design for a Bilingual Touchscreen Interactive

Exhibit DesignTouchscreen UXGame DesignBilingual Content StrategyVisual DesignAccessibility (508/ADA)

Designed a touchscreen game for a state archives exhibit on the history of voting rights. Visitors choose a time period, build an identity from a short set of attributes, and discover whether that person would have been allowed to vote, then learn who else was excluded and why.

The experience uses a locked/unlocked metaphor with a clear color shift between outcomes, a “try again” loop that encourages experimentation, and English/Spanish language switching. Work covered interaction design and screen flow, visual design and illustration direction, and 508/ADA compliance, in collaboration with the exhibit’s content team and developers.

Design comps, before final content.
Build an identity. Six attributes on a paper form, then check eligibility.
The wait state: a crowd walking toward the ballot box while requirements are checked.
Unlocked. Blue field, open ballot box.
Locked. Red field, padlock through the slot, and which requirements blocked access.
Who was excluded in this era, and why.
The idle-state timeout keeps the station ready for the next visitor.
